We had many so great entries this month, thank you to everyone who entered the competition. We decided to pick an object that we had not seen for a while, a galaxy!

This observation of the Fireworks Galaxy is beautiful. A student from the Highcliffe School in Dorset submitted it to our forums. You may sometimes  see the Fireworks Galaxy called NGC 6946 or Caldwell 12. Galaxies come in all shapes and sizes, this one is a spiral galaxy. You can learn more about how astronomers classify galaxies using the Hubble tuning-fork.

You can make your own image of the Fireworks Galaxy or any galaxy by searching our archive for observations and using software such as LTImage to process them.
